Curriculum
Pinckney Schools will begin implementing the national Core Curriculum in the 2013-14 school year. The focus is on 21st Century learning skills students will need to master in order to be successful in our highly competitive work world. Here is a link to the new curriculum standards.
Grading is based upon formative (practice) tasks and summative assessments. Summative assessments can be attempted again once there is some review - see me for specific expectations. Formative tasks don't impact the grade a great deal since they are practice. However, if students don't complete them, responsibility scores will be impacted.

Textbooks
Students will use their laptops daily in English class. In addition, "The Language of Literature" and "Writer's Craft" are used in the classroom and may be signed out and returned when needed. Vocabulary books will also be used as a resource.
Laptop expectations: Laptops should be charged prior to class. Use the first 5 minutes of class for a quick email/grades check, but then begin assigned tasks; refer to agenda and/or smartboard. The laptop is a learning tool, so PCS policy is that playing random games is for before or after school, not during breaks and certainly not during class. Homework Expectations
READ! A novel for at least 60 minutes per week {It's really good for your vocabulary and brain development.}
EFFORT! Sometimes homework is deliberately challenging; it's intended to prepare for discussion/analysis BEFORE the next class period. Please try your hardest on your homework so you're ready to learn! STUDY! Building vocabulary is essential to building knowledge. |
